GreenUP Ecology Park
A unique place for people of all ages to discover a lasting friendship with our natural world. Tucked away from the city’s hustle and bustle, yet easily accessible, it’s a place to relax under the canopy of Peterborough’s urban forest and explore our natural environment. At the Park you’ll find numerous gardens showcasing a unique array of greenery, including edibles, drought-tolerant, and pollinator-attracting plants. Folks of all ages can learn from the educational displays, but the young at heart will especially love the interactive ones. GreenUP Ecology Park is accessible to the public throughout the year, but May through October is when the Park comes to life. The Park is a site for weekend workshops on a variety of sustainable living topics (from cheese-making to composting), school programs, summer day camps and more. There’s something for everyone at GreenUP Ecology Park.
Ecology Park has its roots in Peterborough’s East City at the Rogers Street Community Garden. After a couple of extremely successful years in that location the garden outgrew the space as eager gardeners wanted to expand into growing trees and shrubs. The goal was to get Peterborough residents thinking not only about growing food for humans, but food for all living things and creating and protecting habitat at the same time.
Expansion of such a worthwhile project also was on the mind of the City of Peterborough when the Parks Department offered the current five acre parcel of land in Beavermeade Park. The original garden was moved to its current home in 1993, and has been flourishing ever since.
