PLCPS launches Distracted Driving Campaign

The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service is running a Distracted Driving campaign aimed at providing both education and positive reinforcement. The Campaign was launched today (Sept. 10).

“The goal of the campaign is to enforce the law around distracted driving and to also reward people that are doing the right thing – those citizens that are pulling over safely to answer a phone call or send a text in order to limit their distraction,” explains Community Services Constable John MacLeod.

Over the next several months officers that find a citizen driving responsibly will be rewarded with a coupon for a free buffet lunch valid at Pizza Hut locations in both Peterborough and Lindsay. During this campaign drivers will also be handed an information booklet providing education about the dangers of using wireless devices while driving.

Since January 2014 the Traffic Unit has conducted 22 details, which include Top 10 details, speed details and seatbelt details. During those 22 details, 703 Provincial Offence Notices were issued. Of those 703 Province Offence Notices issued almost 27% were for distracted drivers with cell phones.

“Distracted driving kills. It takes your eyes and mind off the road and your hands off the wheel,” explains Traffic Sergeant Jeff Chartier.

Distracted Driving is defined as any activity that takes a driver’s attention off the road. According to the Ministry of Transportation, when drivers take their eyes off the road for more than two seconds their crash risk doubles. A driver using a cell phone is four times more likely to be in a crash than a driver who is focused on the road.

“If you’re driving your full attention should be on the road,” says Sgt. Chartier.

The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service thanks Pizza Hut and The Vincent Press for their partnership in this project.
